At Elmstead, following the National Curriculum, our aim is to ensure our children are confident in all areas of history in line with the end of Key Stage 2 expectations.  This will ensure that each child is ready to transition to secondary school securely and confidently in all areas. They will develop skills of:  Chronological Understanding; Historical Enquiry; Organisation and Communication and Understanding of Events, People and Changes.

One of the main aims of learning History at Elmstead Primary School is to promote a lifelong fascination about the past by learning about key events and people throughout the world. Teaching of History skills will enable children to develop their understanding and interpretation of the past and its effect on the present.

Through their growing knowledge and understanding of History, children will gain an appreciation of what life was like at various times and be able to effectively communicate this knowledge.

History teaching will help to develop attitudes of curiosity, originality, co-operation, perseverance, open-mindedness, self-criticism, responsibility and independence of thinking.

Each year group has a different history focus and will develop their learning through the vocabulary used and begin to make comparisons between different ages/ critical parts of history. Each key stage has a chronological unit (KS1 - Monarchs, KS2- Crime and Punishment) which draws links between areas already covered and those which will be covered.

To bring the children’s learning to life, we regularly go on trips/ have visitors linked to our history topic. This way, children can see, hear, and experience things first-hand and this allows children to piece everything they have learnt from their topic together.
